Background of the Study
Personalized learning is a pedagogical approach that tailors educational content and methods to meet the individual needs, interests, and learning styles of students. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), personalized learning has been enhanced by the use of AI-powered systems that can create customized learning paths for students (Okafor & Bello, 2023). In secondary schools, particularly in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, AI-based learning systems have started to be used to offer individualized learning experiences. These systems can adapt content, pace, and assessment methods based on the student’s learning progress and preferences, offering a more engaging and effective learning environment.

While AI-based learning tools have been praised for their potential to improve student outcomes, the effectiveness of these tools in the context of secondary schools in Makurdi remains largely unexplored. Personalized AI learning systems can provide tailored content, immediate feedback, and encourage independent learning, yet challenges such as access to technology, teacher training, and the alignment of AI tools with local curricula need to be addressed. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based personalized learning paths in secondary schools in Makurdi, aiming to determine their impact on student engagement, academic achievement, and overall learning experiences.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing interest in AI-based personalized learning tools, their effectiveness in secondary schools in Makurdi has not been well-documented. Concerns about the ability of these tools to meet local educational needs, as well as issues such as insufficient infrastructure and teacher readiness, may affect the success of these technologies. The study seeks to investigate whether AI-based learning paths effectively improve student outcomes in Makurdi’s secondary schools.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based personalized learning paths in secondary schools in Makurdi, Benue State.

  2. To assess the impact of AI-based learning systems on student engagement and motivation in secondary schools.

  3. To explore the challenges faced by teachers and students in implementing personalized AI learning tools in secondary schools in Makurdi.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are AI-based personalized learning paths in improving student outcomes in secondary schools in Makurdi?

  2. What impact does AI-based learning have on student engagement and motivation in Makurdi secondary schools?

  3. What challenges do teachers and students face in implementing AI-based personalized learning paths in Makurdi secondary schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based personalized learning paths significantly improve student academic outcomes in secondary schools in Makurdi.

  2. AI-based learning systems increase student engagement and motivation in secondary schools in Makurdi.

  3. The implementation of AI-based personalized learning paths faces significant challenges in secondary schools in Makurdi.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical insights into the effectiveness of AI-based personalized learning systems in secondary schools. The findings will contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of AI in education and provide recommendations for improving the use of technology to enhance learning outcomes in secondary schools in Makurdi and similar regions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on secondary schools in Makurdi, Benue State, evaluating the use and effectiveness of AI-based personalized learning paths. It will not examine primary schools or other forms of technology-based learning systems. Limitations include the challenges of data collection and the potential lack of resources for implementing AI tools in all schools.
